Happy Blockheads Wednesday! It's Week 15, which means we’ve reached the halfway point of our Group 2 blocks today can you believe it? Time flies when you’re having fun!

Today’s guest Blockheads designer is Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs, known for her sweet and whimsical take on traditional style. Her Keepsake block provides lots of potential for making this design your own, while bringing us back to a couple of foundational quilting elements – no, not foundation paper piecing, but HSTs and flying geese!

You can find this week’s pattern here: BH5 – Group 2, Block 15 – Keepsake by Anne Sutton

Something new we’re doing for this round of Blockheads is a weekly video. You can follow along with me as I sew the block of the week and share my tips and tricks and talk about different construction techniques. I’ll post the videos on YouTube and share them here on the blog. You can watch this week’s video below:

This week, we’re making HSTs and four-at-a-time flying geese. The four-at-a-time method is my absolute favorite way to make flying geese – and I used to really dislike this method. For me, the trick is to use slightly larger pieces so that you end up with just-a-little-oversized flying geese that you trim down. The result is a perfect flying geese unit. I guess that means we can’t technically call them “no waste,” but I still find it to be more fabric-efficient and faster to construct – and most importantly, I’m not frustrated by the end results!

However, I do know that many quilters prefer the stitch-and-flip method of making flying geese. If you’re not ready to try the four-at-a-time method, here are the cutting requirements for making the stitch-and-flip flying geese for Anne’s block:

For 6” finished blocks:

C: (8) 1 1/2” squares
D: (4) 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” rectangles

For 12” finished blocks:

C: (8) 2 1/2” squares
D: (4) 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles

Are you ready to see our blocks?

Lissa is using Nantucket for her blocks, in a mix of 6” and 12” blocks. This week, she made a 6” block.

Alison is making a fall version in 12” blocks and a patriotic version in 6” blocks.

And I am making a traditional/repro scrappy fall version and a sweet/cottage-y Americana version in 6” blocks.

Now…off you go to press, cut, and sew! And don’t forget to share your blocks with us in our Facebook group or on Instagram (#modablockheads5)!
